The bison seems to be a hallmark of North Dakota. I used to hate seeing it placed on anything North Dakota. It made me sick to see it on the quarter or again on the license plate. I have never understood why we keep dipping into the same well. Upon further research I realized I was mad about the wrong problem. Its not that it's a bison. It's how the animal is used. Too often it's just slapped in a design as an after thought. There is no purpose behind the choice, no style to drive decisions. If your going to have a bison in your design, make it say something other then "North Dakota loves buffalos." Cus We already know that. There are so many tropes out there. It's easy to get mad about them. But I urge you to use that energy to make something new out of something played out. Be productive and creative. What's your favorite cliche? How can you turn it on its head?

This is one of my favorite things I have picked up over my travels. The first time I went to England I visited the Anne Hathaway Cottage. This is a 500 year old cottage where Shakespeare fell in love with his future wife. Just a few streets down I walked into a little shop of hand made pottery and crafts. I fell in love with these little mice. There was a 98 year old lady who saw me melt over these little things and she introduced herself as the artist. We talked briefly about the town and our plans for the evening. She must have been about 4 and a half feet tall and looked like someone right out of a Harry Potter book.
I bought 4 mice from her for one pound. It doesn't matter how much things cost. The value is in the story, feelings and time. How will you fill your page today? Make a plan do something different. Take a walk to a place you haven't been yet. Go to a restaurant you haven't tried. Talk to a co-worker you haven't gotten to know.
You can always start small when doing something different, over time its going to take you to a place you wouldn't have gone to otherwise. It takes courage and confidence. It has some risks but it often brings great rewards: the challenge of the new, the thrill of exploration, growth from learning and self-confidence from success.
~Patrick Lindsay It seems like we are a generation of entrepreneurs. We have friends that started their businesses years ago and some that are just starting to live their dream this summer. Watching them take the plunge to build their lives is so encouraging for us to continue working hard. So if you ever need a cheerleader or a pick me up just let us know. Your doing great! Keep up the hard work! Sometimes you just have to pick your mom some flowers.
When my mom was away helping a friend she sent my brother and me this quote. One day, when my children are grown, I hope they still come through that front door without knocking. I hope they head to the kitchen for a snack and rifle through the mail looking for a magazine they always read. I hope they come in and feel the weight of adulthood leave them, for they are home. For my children, my door will forever be open. Above all else, I hope they know this without me telling them. Love speaks clearly enough. Go out and surprise your mom with something special. Have you ever thought....
“Man, I should be a cowboy” I am pretty sure thats what Ellie was thinking when trying on Bens new fedora today. I have this bad habit of putting hats, necklaces, costumes and scarves on poor Ellie but she doesn't seem to mind. In fact I think its made her quite the well rounded dog. and yes Ellie, I think you would have made for a pretty good cowboy. If Ben and I have been a guest at your wedding you probably recognize this book. This 5 year memory book is something we love to give to our friends when they start their lives together. You are supposed to keep it by your bed and write in a sentence each day and after a year you can see what you did that same day the year before. We are working on our 3rd year in this book and have missed only a few days. It is so neat to see our life in the past. What the weather was like, notes from our travels, visiting times we received traumatic news and watching the healing process afterward. Its a good reminder that life moves on and you need to enjoy everyday.
About two years ago Ben started refinishing old axes. He gets most of his work done in the winter with a great work shop in our garage. They are meant to be used as they were intended for. I think he has 5 or so more lined up for this winter. If you want to see what is available now here is a link to Bens online store.
http://www.benbrick.net/store/c1/Featured_Products.html Don’t spend your life weighing things up.
Golfers call it paralysis by analysis. Draw on your experience. Trust your judgement. Learn to read your gut reactions. You’ll make mistakes, don't fear them. You’ll get many more right than wrong. Allow yourself to be wrong sometimes. Learn from those mistakes. Mistakes are often the best part of life. ~ Patrick Lindsay This was the first time I have been to Sylvan Lake South Dakota in the fall. I have mentioned this special place so many times. It was beautiful this time of year. There were no people around and that allowed the wildlife the confidence to be on the trails. I can't wait to get back there. Where is your special place in the world? Invest in yourself: As a kid I spent hours on the floor drawing cartoons. I never needed a desk to create and I still probably don't but why risk it? There's nothing quite like a custom made desk to get you motivated to draw something. Today I spend hours standing by this magestic work of art from @artifex.furniture . When I look it in the eye It tells me to get off my rear and make something. Yes... I could create without it but why would you want to? If your going to spend a butt load of money make it count! Invest in your talents. I'd rather have this desk then a jet ski any day of the week! #blog#illustration #me #fun #style #swag #life #cool #work #invest #desk #table#drawing #draftingtable #worthit #instadaily http://ift.tt/29OwWZb
